‘ Remember your retreat into this little domain of which is yourself, and above all be not disturbed nor on the rack, but be free and look at things as a man, a human being, a citizen a creature that must die.‘ -Marcus Aurelius, Meditations.
These days, I have been feeling rather fragile by how I temporarily perceive the world to be. I know, there are plethora of questions up in my mind that I seek for an accurate and rational answer, however it may be impossible to achieve one as we human tend to be unconsciously driven by irrationality . The information that we received and the information that are already instilled in us determines our behaviour or actions in that moment. Proceeding information that emerges would also create a whole set of new ideas and way of thinking. Therefore, uncertainties are all around us and we cannot deny them. These perhaps generate intrinsic fear among society.
Today, I have watched a 2011 documentary Ethos, directed by Pete Mcgrain. You can find many other notable references and information on their website. I highly recommend you to watch this documentary, as it concerns on how our world being driven by corporate interests, how they are consumed with power and wealth to control the nation and how easily we are to indirectly be ‘influenced’ to their propaganda. I want to highlight a particular quote which I think was truly profound. ‘Rationality belongs to the cool observer, but because of the stupidity of the average man, he follows not reason, but faith, and the naive faith requires necessary illusion and emotionally potent oversimplifications which are provided by the myth-maker to keep ordinary person on course‘ by Reinhold Niebuhr, Moral Man and Immoral Society 1932.
As a 19 year old, I find myself constantly on a swing, being pushed back and forth between the past and present. In a state of confusion and agony, I thought the world has betrayed me into living a life I have not chosen to be part of. All in all, there are still so many underlying truths that we are oblivious about and the intention behind it are still unclear, well at least for me it is. I am determined to want to learn and understand more the world at a bigger picture. I don’t think it would be a very pleasant process but I thought I want to share the journey and the developments I have so far achieved on this blog. I’ve learnt to not take words whole-heartedly even though they conform to my current perceptions but to dig deeper into the modus-operandi behind the facts presented, the simplest way to say this is to think critically at all times.
‘I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring‘ – David Bowie.
As for now, I have found it is important to be more open-minded and think for myself first before having others to accept my way of thinking. I urge you to do the same, and question even the logical way things are currently running in your life.
‘Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now its the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.’ – Helen Keller
